Cologne, 25 September 2018 – The following statements of Olympus’ Head of Imaging Business Unit, Shigemi Sugimoto, may be quoted directly by media and represent Olympus’ core messages at photokina 2018.

Key message from Olympus to visitors of the photokina 2018

“The Olympus Perspective Playground offers all photokina visitors a unique hands-on experience with our world leading technologies in compact lightweight mirrorless cameras and our ever growing line-up of high-resolution lenses which together produce stunning image quality demanded by professional photographers. Visitors will have the opportunity to extensively test the current OM-D and Olympus PEN line-up and enjoy the most mobile interchangeable lens camera system on the market first hand. We want to be close to our customers, allow them to let their creativity flow freely and give them a special experience by offering advice, providing an inspirational stage program and giving the opportunity to join workshops at the Olympus Perspective Playground. With this focus, Olympus’ fair motto of photokina 2018 has shifted to provide a “Creative Photography Festival” instead of a standard fair booth showcasing products.

With this approach we consequently support the new concept of the photokina, which features an enhanced offering for end customers focused on experiencing photography. We believe the new photokina to be a good platform for an event concept like the Olympus Perspective Playground and therefore already decided to join the upcoming photokina 2019 with the Perspective Playground as well.”

Olympus’ role in the worldwide development of the Imaging market: Our business philosophy and strategy

“While we expect the worldwide market for digital cameras to decline further, the segment of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras is growing – a trend that we focus on for many years now and that also other manufacturers recently acknowledged with new products.

Our goal in the Imaging Business is to establish a firm market presence in the growing segment of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Our philosophy is to focus on the personal mobility and spontaneity of our customers with products that are compact and lightweight but technologically advanced in order to produce great image quality. Therefore, Olympus will continue to introduce unique mirrorless cameras that offer performance that surpasses single-lens-reflex cameras. In the compact digital camera segment, we want to further develop our Tough series of dust-, water-and shockproof cameras that are ideal for outdoor use. Our main focus however remains with mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the Micro Four Thirds system standard –being a pioneer and continuing innovator of mirrorless cameras, we strongly believe in the benefits this sensor format has to offer, especially when it comes to the reduced size and weight of the camera system. Technological advancement allowed us to develop a system that today meets the needs of professional photographers in terms of speed, precision, reliability and image quality while being significantly smaller than SLR and mirrorless camera systems with larger sensor formats.

Mobility and reliability is and will remain our main value in the market. Our customers may carry their Olympus system anywhere due to its compact size, our acclaimed image stabilization allows for hand-held shooting in situations usually requiring a tripod and every moment may be captured in high image quality due to leading technologies in our cameras as well as our line-up of high resolution lenses. This is the key benefit of the Olympus brand in the Imaging business.

Aiming at offering the best photography experience, constant innovation is very important at Olympus. Our first priority is what we call system mobility – not just the size of our camera bodies, but the entire system including the lenses. We will further enhance our Micro Four Thirds camera line-up and also expand our offering of high-quality lenses. We will improve our strengths such as the image stabilization and reliability of our cameras as well as our world-leading lens processing technologies further. Moreover, we will continue to work on customer demands such as improvements in operability.”
